Sun Cellular Unlimited Call and Text Services To Continue Despite PLDT’s Acquisition

Just recently, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) together with JG Summit Holdings, Inc. (JGS), announced that they entered into an “all-share transaction” in which JGS will exchange stake of its telecommunication business, Digitel, for a new PLDT shares.

The merger will then pose ownership of PLDT over Sun Cellular, Digitel’s wholy-owned subsidiary in mobile business best known for its unlimited voice and SMS services. Sun Cellular is also the 2nd main competitor (next to Globe Telecom) of Smart Communications, PLDT’s wholy-owned mobile and internet business segment. Smart Communications also owns both Talk ‘N Text and Red Mobile brands running on EDGE/UMTS and 3G networks, respectively.

Now that PLDT’s acquisition of Digitel is expected to be completed in the next three months, the biggest concern for consumers is whether there would still be a good competition in the “unlimited” offers. Because for Sun Cellular subscribers, they had switched to the network probably due to the competitive offers. No worry folks, though, because PLDT just announced it will continue to offer Sun Cellular unlimited voice and text services even after the acquisition.

“Our intention is to maintain Sun’s current offers and further improve them. One clear opportunity is mobile broadband,” said PLDT President and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno. “Leveraging the combined networks of PLDT, Smart and Sun, we plan to expand the reach and raise the quality of mobile broadband services for Sun subscribers. This is in line with our Internet for All advocacy.”, Nazareno added.
Sounds interesting, eh? Well, at least in my own opinion, that would really makes sense and that answers everyone’s doubts of possibly waving goodbye to Sun’s best offers.

Google +1 Button, the New Way to Recommend Websites and Pages in Google Search

Google is rolling out a new feature called +1 (reads “Plus One”) represented by a white small box with numerical symbol at the center of it, which then turns its color to blue when clicked from the Search Engine Result Page (SERP).

The +1 button is yet another social feature of Google Search as a way for users of telling they recommend a particular webpage discovered after doing a search. The new feature would then help Google identify which of among the number of links from the search results are relevant based on the number of +1’s, thus delivering even more relevant results to other users searching for same queries.

Here’s a video showing how Google +1 works.

Google says they’re already rolling the new feature starting in English in Google.com; however, you may also opt-in ahead of the schedule in your location by joining the experiment at Google Labs.

Could this be Google's answer to Facebook "Like" or "Recommend" features? Well, I guess so.

PLDT Acquires JG Summit’s Digitel; Sun Cellular to Benefit 3G and Broadband Services of the Philippine Telco Juggernaut

The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and JG Summit Holdings, Inc. (JGS) announced Tuesday, the acquisition of Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. (Digitel) by the Philippine Telco juggernaut, PLDT.

Digitel is the country’s second-largest fixed-line telecommunication company by the Gokongwei family-owned JGS Holdings; and is the owner of the Digitel Mobile Philippines, Inc. or better known for its brand as Sun Cellular.

The acquisition is an “all-share transaction” in which PLDT will take over 51.55% of Digitel’s total share, amounting to Php 74.1 billion, and in exchange – JGS Holdings will get 12.8% of PLDT’s stake plus a seat at the Telco’s Board of Directors. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter this year.

Though it’s obvious that PLDT (which operates its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc.) would have the full control of Digitel – the disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange says “mobile operations of Digitel will remain separate and intact”; to maintain and capitalize on Sun Cellular’s operations to continue serving specific market segments particularly the “unlimited” service.

The acquisition of Digitel/Sun Cellular will allow them to leverage PLDT/Smart Communications’ infrastructure, thus providing a better service to consumers; however the merger could also result into less competition, not unless the lone Globe Telecom beat all the odds, perhaps for the common good. What do you think?

Amazon Launched Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web, and Cloud Player for Android

To meet the ongoing demand of cloud-based music storage, Amazon announced today the launch of a new set of services called Amazon Cloud Drive, Amazon Cloud Player for Web, and Amazon Cloud Player for Android.

The new services will be available only to US Amazon customers though, in which they can securely store music in the cloud and have it played on any Android-based smart phones, Android tablets, Mac, or PC – anytime, anywhere.

With Amazon Cloud Drive, customers can upload and store digital files including music, photos, videos, and other documents from their computer, starting with 5GB of free storage space; and an upgrade to 20GB of Cloud Drive storage is available once a purchase of any Amazon MP3 album is completed. Amazon also says new purchases of Amazon MP3 saved directly to the Cloud Drive will be stored for free, and won’t count on the given customer’s storage quota. Fair enough, huh.

The Amazon Cloud Player for Web is an application that will allow customers to listen to their music from their computers’ web browsers. Supported browsers include Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari. Cloud Player for Android on the other hand is a mobile version of the Cloud Player for Web, bundled in the new version of Amazon MP3 App. Cloud Player for Android can be used to play music stored both in the Cloud Drive or the ones stored locally on devices.

You can learn more about Cloud Drive, Cloud Player for Web, and Cloud Player for Android from here, here, and here.

Aboitiz Power Alter Space Facebook Game Brings Awareness to Saving Mother Nature

Aboitiz Power unveiled Saturday at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, the first Filipino-made Facebook game with an environmental advocacy.

Alter Space is a social networking game which aims to bring awareness on how people can lower carbon footprint and help preserve the Earth’s resources. Aboitiz Power, one of the major players in the Philippine power industry, also had a chance to introduce its own brand of clean and renewable energy called Cleanergy.

The Alter Space
The Alter Space Game

Like any other Facebook game applications, Alter Space has been designed with similar programming concepts with other casual games. But what brings Alter Space unique to the social crowd is its advocacy and cause to saving Mother Nature. Basically, the game could be another portal in the most popular social networking site to learning practical tips in an environment-friendly living as it let gamers know more about “carbon footprint” and how they can help lower its concentration in a day-to-day activities.

Playing Alter Space

Got to play again Alter Space the other day (Oh yeah, I’ve already played it before last Saturday’s event), and I realized it’s one of the most enjoyable activities everyone on Facebook should engage with, as far as casual games are concerned. Read on the synopsis below, hit this link to play the game, and do let us know what you think about it.

In Alter Space, you not only have your own virtual home but an entire planet to take care of. The choices you make during the game will determine whether your planet has more or less total carbon emissions. The objective of the game is to make choices and fulfill tasks that will increase your Happiness Level while ensuring that carbon emissions are kept to a safe amount.

You must fulfill certain tasks (cooking, taking a shower, buying food, going to the park, shopping, watching TV, using the computer, etc.) in order to increase his or her Happiness Level. Every time the Happiness Level reaches 100 per cent, your avatar goes up one game level. The game goes up to Level 5.

You must continuously earn “Currency” during the game. This is done by playing various mini-games. These mini-games involve harvesting energy from alternative sources: a solar power plant, a geothermal plant and a hydro-electric plant—all of which provide energy without carbon emissions.

Alter Space also includes details and touches that showcase Filipino culture, like buying food from a “turo-turo”; playing sungka; or using a pamaypay or fan, and many others.

Some practical tips you learn in Alter Space are: a) Using natural sunlight to brighten your house as much as possible; b) Using energy-saving light bulbs in the house; c) Using a pail of water when you bathe, instead of the shower; d) Using an LCD television set instead of the old CRT TVs; LCD TVs consume less energy and result in less carbon emissions.

Yahoo Search Direct Deliver Results as You Type

Yahoo is rolling out a new feature to its search engine called Search Direct.

Basically, Yahoo Search Direct works in a way in which a user gets the results by displaying it before a particular query is completed. Sounds familiar? Well, it’s actually similar to Google Instant in which it predicts search results based on what the person types and have the results presented to the user, dynamically.

Yahoo Search Direct
But unlike Google Instant which delivers a website-centered search results, Yahoo Search Direct cover result categories including those from the top trending searches, movies, TV, weather, local, travel, stocks, and shopping. By default, the moment you click on the search box, you’ll be presented with the trending searches; and hovering on the list of trending searches, you’ll get the aggregated relevant results. Type the first character of your query, and there you will see Search Direct in action.

Interested? You can try it here, and of course – do let us know what you think about it.

LG Announced Wireless Charging Pad, WCP-700

Wireless charging could be the next leap in the growing popularity of smart phones and tablet devices.

HP has its own Touchstone, there’s another one from an independent mobile accessory company Powermat, and the newest entry to the wireless charger line-up is from LG called Wireless Charging Pad (WCP-700).

Basically, the Wireless Charging Pad is a portable charging system that a user plugs into the outlet, and wirelessly charging compatible mobile devices when placed on top of it. Technically, LG’s WCP-700 works with the same magnetic induction technology, in which it alleviates the need of physical connections in transferring electrical energy from a power source into the battery of mobile devices.

I’m actually thinking we’ll be seeing more and more handset manufacturers introducing similar accessories in the future. And it would be great if they come up with something more efficient, environment-friendly and of course less-expensive.

LG says the Wireless Charging Pad will retail for $69.99 and will be available comes April this year. Let’s see if we spot one here in the Philippines.

Sky Broadband’s 5Mbps for Php 999 Ain’t Bad

1Mpbs somehow could be the plan-of-choice by most broadband internet subscribers in the Philippines.

For just Php 999 a month, one can get an unlimited internet connection quite enough for web surfing, video streaming, VoIP services, among others. If you’re a heavy user, you probably have noticed that sometimes your connection feel creepy, perhaps because your ISP is employing bandwidth throttling to minimize congestion of the network. But how about a 5Mbps data transfer speed just for the same price? Well, I think that’s something to consider whether it’s what you really want to suffice your internet needs.

Sky Broadband, SKYCable’s internet service, is now offering a new consumable plan with data speed of 5 Mbps just for Php 999. Basically, that’s five times faster than the usual 1 Mbps Plan from other ISP’s, yet stays just of the same price. The only catch here though, is the data cap of 15GB in a month. Broadband data capping here in the country remains a debatable issue that even our very own NTC dropped its proposal to include it on the memorandum order announced last year. But for Sky Broadband, it’s yet another choice of a faster, unlimited internet access.

If you think your average monthly data consumption is less than 15GB, then this plan would better suffice, as far as speed is concerned. Need more than 15GB of bandwidth cap? Well, just add Php 100 more on top of the initial Php 999 and you get an additional 1GB of data for the month.

The new 5 Mbps plan also comes with a monthly data cap of 35GB, but this time the price is doubled, that is Php 1,999. Ain’t that bad, huh? Go check it out, and do let us know what you think about it.

Samsung Philippines SRP for Galaxy Tab Drops to Php 21,990

It’s very obvious. Sammy won’t be competitive enough in the tablet warfare if the company won’t cut the current price point of its first tablet – the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

We expect this year to see more tablet devices from other brands coming into the competition, mostly are built with decent specs trying to outperform the likes of Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. HTC Flyer, Motorola XOOM, BlackBerry PlayBook, ASUS Eee Pad Tablets – just to name few are all first iteration of the big players in the tablet arena. And yes, those low-cost models from the French company Archos and our homegrown Cherry Mobile still count and they do have a share of the pie.

But for the pioneers, it’s just the beginning. In fact, Apple just released its iPad 2 more than a week ago; while Samsung is still prepping the official launch of its 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab. The tight competition dictates the price direction and for companies to stay competitive (and perhaps dominative?), they have to look back at the original price points of its devices. There should be a markdown. Apple already did that. Here in the Philippines, the first-gen iPad is already priced Php 4K less than the original price. And for Samsung to implement the same marketing strategy, the Korean company is also slashing the original price of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab. Interesting!

Just got a word that Samsung Philippines already have a new suggested retail price for the Galaxy Tab, model GT-P1000. How much? Well, expect to have it for Php 21,990. That’s Php 13K less than the official price when it first sells here in the country. If you are thinking of buying one, go check out my first impression before you visit your favorite Samsung reseller. But make sure the tablet already have the reduced price tag, because the final word from the person I talked with was- the company is still ironing everything to see every store in the country is selling the tablet with the same markdown price. Not bad, eh?

Gevey iPhone 4 SIM Can Unlock Baseband 2.10.04, 3.10.01 on iOS 4.1, 4.2.1, and 4.3

Now that iOS 4.3 is out for iPhone 4 users, what’s next for the unlockers?

We understand that the software-based unlock from the iPhone Dev Team for basebands 2.10.04 and 3.10.01 won’t probably be coming out until they released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3, despite discovering an exploit for the said basebands. Yet, we still don’t have specifics when the next baseband unlock would be coming. It’s just really a matter of time, and soon the Dev Team will bring something good news for unlockers in the jailbreaking community.

But for those who really can’t wait for the next software-based unlock (could it still be Ultrasn0w?), a team from China behind what is called a Gevey SIM, published images and videos showing how they managed to unlock iPhone 4 basebands 2.10.04 and 3.10.01 on iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2.1 (iOS 4.3 could be vulnerable too) – just by using a SIM card. The specialized SIM is called “SIM Interposer” by which Laforet of Singularity blog explained everything behind the baseband unlocking action in detail.

Below is the video showing two carrier locked iPhone 4 running on different iOS firmware versions, and have been unlocked just by using the Gevey SIM.

How did It Work?

SIM card holds many different types of information, but the part most involved with carrier lock is the IMSI number, which is a unique code that corresponds to your account in the mobile carrier's database.

A sample IMSI might look like this

310 150 987654321

The first two segments are known as Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC) respectively, and in the example above the IMSI indicate the SIM is from USA (310) AT&T (150).

When the iPhone baseband is loaded into memory, it checks the MCC and MNC against its own network lock state stored in the seczone. If the combination is allowed, the cell radio is activated and vice versa.

The earliest iPhone baseband revisions only check IMSI twice following a restart, therefore it is very easy to send spoof information in order to bypass the check. Nevertheless, the baseband was soon updated to validate SIM more aggressively and the method soon became obsolete.
What does it mean to unlockers?

1. It works if A.your network handles 112 calls properly according to the GSM standard; B.they are tolerant to TSMI spoofing and does not actively validate your SIM again for incoming calls.

2. Unlike its ancestors, the i4 SIM interposer is not a drop-in-and-forget device. The exact precedure must be performed should the device restart, lose reception for an extended period of time or move to another PLMN. In all situations the TMSI expires and has to be obtained again. Theoretically it is possible for a daemon to automate the process similar to ZeroG, but that only makes thing more convoluted.

3. It is, without question, unethical or downright illegal to use the technique anywhere 112 is a legitimate emergency number. Not a huge issue in China where the number is only used for informative purpose; the providers have no immediate incentive to fix the loophole.

4. All firmware/baseband combinations for the i4 up to iOS4.3 are vulnerable; however the exploit may be patched in any future software updates or via the carrier. If apple can influence providers to block Lydia it is not impossible for them to press them to fix the exploit. The only way to permanently unlock your baseband is via NCK.

5. SIM interposer should not harm your phone hardware; however your network could request IMEI and identify your device during the emergency call. Your identity cannot be faked and it is possible that they will ban your account. There is a reason why SIM cards remain legally the property of the service provider: you are not supposed to tamper with them without breaching contract.

6. Notwithstanding all the problems, SIM interposer does not cause any battery drain since it is only active transiently, nor would it cause signal loss because it does not change cellular transmission other than the initial validation step.
Albeit being legally questionable, an initial price of the Gevey SIM is at US$50, but the official pricing is still yet to be announced when it go on sale comes March 18th to 21st. Stay tuned as I'm going to let you know once it's officially out. So anyone buying?

Update: Gevey SIM is now being sold online for US $75.

Philippine 2011 Bar Exam Results Posted at SC Website, Complete List of Passers is Also Here!

The Supreme Court of the Philippines announced the other day that the official list of successful examinees of the Bar Examinations held on September 5, 12, 19, and 26, 2010 at the De La Salle University (DLSU) in Taft Avenue, Manila will be posted online and can be viewed directly from the SC website today.

To better serve the Philippine online community particularly those aspiring lawyers who actually are CTB friends and readers, we will also be posting the complete list of passers of last year’s Bar Exam. Well, just as a proactive measure since we’re expecting there could be an outage of SC’s own server.

Originally, a total of 5,038 law graduates from different law schools in the country filed petitions to take the September 2010 Bar Exam; however, only 4,847 examinees were able to finish the tests in all 8 subjects in the field of law- after 156 of them absented after the first day of the Bar Exam and 9 more dropped out before the final examination day.

And finally, only 982 successful examinees are included in the official list of the Supreme Court. Without further ado, go check the list below.

Apple Philippines iPad 2 Price

When Apple released the first generation iPad models last year, it started at $499 to $699 for the Wi-Fi only version; while the one which supports both 3G and Wi-Fi are priced at $629 to $829 depending on the storage size.

The 2nd-gen iPad which has already been released in the US few days ago comes with a price tag similar to its predecessor, regardless of the model.

Though the Philippines is not included on the list of selected territories to have the tablet available by March 25th, the country seems to show huge interest of the iPad 2 slate over other tablets; despite seeing a significant drop of the original iPad price. And what’s more interesting to see is how iPad 2 prices vary from several resellers in the grey market. This is perhaps due to a high demand, yet only few units are available in the supply chain. The cheapest I’ve seen at Sulit.com.ph is at Php 27,500 for a 16GB Wi-Fi Only iPad 2, or as high as Php 31,500 for the same model from another vendor. Expect to see higher prices for other models though.

When the 1st-gen iPad landed here in the country, Apple Philippines posted an entry level price tag of Php 23,990 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only version, or Php 30,990 for Wi-Fi with 3G version of the tablet. Add Php 5K or Php 10K more and you get the 32GB or 64GB versions, respectively. Though there are really lots of factors to consider in pricing of goods here in the country, for the case of Apple, I’m expecting to see iPad 2 priced not far from that of its predecessor. Should I say just around Php 24,500 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model? Well, with the constant fluctuation of the exchange rates – I’m not really sure. But with the strong competition of the tablets, I don’t think iPad 2 would be too pricey for Apple to win.

If Apple follows the same roadmap of the 1st-gen iPad in the country, we can expect an official release of iPad 2 by Q4 this year. And if that sounds too long for you before you can take your hands on the tablet, I think you have the reason to take the bait of the quite expensive slates in the grey market. Should you?

Anyway, I’ll just let you know once we got the official price of iPad 2 here in the Philippines.
