Is Globe Telecom 4G Mobile Technology and Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini Available in Cebu?

I got this question last Friday from our “Ask Cebu Tech Blogger” section and I thought this piece of query could also be of interest to other readers.

The sender wanted to be anonymous so we’ll keep it that way. Here's the question:

Is Globe Telecom 4G Mobile Technology and Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini Available in Cebu?
Well, for HSPA+, the answer is No. Not yet, but Globe has plans of rolling out its 4G mobile to other major cities in the country outside Metro Manila. Globe Telecom has no ETA for that though, so it’s not safe yet to say we’ll have it by Q4 of 2011 or early 2012. The Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini stick isn’t available here in Cebu either.

As of this writing, Globe’s 4G has already been deployed in selected locations in the cities of Taguig, Las Pinas, Marikina, Muntinlupa , Pasig, Paranaque, Quezon, Mandaluyong, Navotas, Caloocan, Makati, Roxas, Pasay, and Manila.

For those who haven’t heard about Globe’s 4G Mobile Technology, it’s actually the telco’s attempt to offer its subscribers an even higher speed of mobile or wireless broadband internet. But technically speaking, this is not the “real” 4G yet as defined in the standards set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other standard bodies like IEEE. The 4G-thingy here (for marketing purposes) only refers to the enhancements of current 3G technologies, which can offer peak rates beyond the general 3G speed, but doesn't reach the real 4G speed requirement. This includes HSPA+ (up to 84 Mbps downlink and 22 Mbps uplink), Long Term Evolution or LTE (100 Mbps downlink, 50 Mbps uplink), and Mobile WiMAX (128 Mbps downlink, 56 Mbps uplink).

Globe Telecom is actually using HSPA+ on its “latest 4G” wireless technology and even though HSPA+ can offer peak theoretical download speed up to 21 Mbps with upgradeability of up to 84 Mbps, Globe only assures its subscribers to enjoy browsing at a typical speed of 4-6 Mbps. Globe currently offers Tattoo WiMAX operating on its WiMAX network, but it's definitely not the fastest on its wireless broadband lineup.

The Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini on the other hand is the latest broadband stick from Globe. It’s the first Globe product to leverage its HSPA+ network. Tonino Lamborghini can offer up to 10 Mbps download speed.

We'll update this post once Globe "4G" network and the Tonino Lamborghini broadband stick are already available here in Cebu. If you got related tech questions, shoot us one via this link
