BlackBerry App World Hit 1-Billion Download Milestone!

The Canadian telecommunication company Research in Motion (RIM), best known for its BlackBerry handsets, announced on Tuesday its 1-billion milestone of downloaded apps through its application distribution service BlackBerry App World.

The BlackBerry App World storefront launched a little over two years ago, and over that time, we’ve made many feature improvements, enhanced the look and feel, and added a ton of compelling apps. BlackBerry App World is now in over 100 countries, seeing an average of 3 million downloads per day, and we recently crossed the 1 billion app download milestone!
The 1-billion figures also include download count for application updates though (not just initial download of an app), yet it’s still a great number to trumpet despite the challenges the company is struggling over the past few weeks. The latest number of downloadable applications from the App World is still unclear, but we can recall it had already crossed the 15,000 mark in Q3 of 2010.

RIM plans to roll out BlackBerry App World 3.0 later this month, and is expected to release 7 new BlackBerry phones this year. [via]
