Apple to Unveil iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion, and iCloud at WWDC 2011; Seems No iPhone 4S or iPhone 5

Enough for the rumors of the next generation smartphone from the Cupertino company because what we are expecting as the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 is unlikely to exist in reality, at least during the upcoming Wordwide Developers Conference (WWDC) set on Monday, June 6th in San Francisco, California.

In a press release, Apple is said to unveil only its next generation software - the Mac OS X Lion, the iOS 5, and the company’s upcoming cloud services offering - the iCloud.

Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.
The WWDC is actually the historic annual event of Apple in which new iPhone hardware is being introduced. But with the recent announcement, Apple seems to change its roadmap - that is not unveiling the new model of its smartphone at the event.

That means, certainty of the next iPhone is still has to be deciphered through our creative theories. But who knows Steve Jobs will bring us some surprises. Of course we’ll be following the happenings in WWDC, so just stay tuned for updates. [via]

A Brief Tour of Symbian^3 on Nokia N8

Symbian^3 is the latest version of the mobile OS actively marketed by Nokia.

It first became available on Nokia N8, and is also the operating system that runs on later handset models like Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01, and Nokia E7. Symbian^3 is considered the major development of Symbian^1 or the 5th Edition of Series 60 platform, bringing new features over the latter which include Multi-touch input support, number of customizable home screen (3 vs. 1), support for 802.11n WLAN standards on top of 802.11b and 802.11g, USB on the go support, underlining spell checker, push notifications, support for OpenVPN, and among others.

On my first impression of Nokia N8, I mentioned that having a longer encounter with Symbian S60 platform on my previous Nokia phone allows me to adapt easily with the Symbian^3 operating system. That’s because the Symbian OS has been is being designed that way. Once you’re used to older versions of Symbian, switching between devices which run on later version of the same OS is not really much of a problem. For those who haven’t played with Symbian^3 just yet may find it exciting to see how the entire user interface really looks.

Below is an embedded video I took awhile ago, though not really the best one, but just good to show every part of the Symbian^3 UI. Hit the video after the break and do let us know what you think about it.

ASUS Padfone Unveiled, Converge Tablet and Smartphone into a Single Device

If we are to think of a device as a result of merging a tablet and smartphone, definitely ASUS has the answer for it.

Take a look at the photos below.

The Taiwan-based computer product manufacturer, ASUS, called it Padfone. The ASUS Padfone is not just the usual tablet that transforms into a portable computer, but something that will converge both tablet and smartphone (hence the name), bringing the new experience all of us have never seen before.

The Padfone solves the problem of data transfer hassles and multiple SIM cards when both a smartphone and 3G tablet are used. With the Padfone, the smartphone docks inside the tablet to give users an expanded view to suit their tasks. With the phone docked, it can recharge from the tablet's larger battery and the tablet can also make use of the smartphone's 3G internet connection. The dual interfaces for both the pad and phone ensure an enhanced user experience as the layout is automatically adjusted for all activities such as video conferencing, web browsing and emailing.
Cool!

Though quite enticing, ASUS didn’t make any announcement as to when the device will hit stores. Final specs are unclear either, but the mock-up shown at the on-going Computex in Taiwan suggests Padfone includes a 4.3-inch smartphone and a 10.1-inch tablet with a dock. One thing we are certain though, it will run on Android! Could it be Ice Cream Sandwich? Your guess is as good as mine. Surely we’ll uncover everything we need to know about this device, so just stay tuned! [via]

HTC Wildfire S Philippines: Price, Specs, and Availability Update

One of HTC’s Android handsets that made a big hit in the Philippine market last year is the HTC Wildfire.

Following the same roadmap with the HTC Desire, the Wildfire also receives a major refresh both in hardware and software, and got a new name as the HTC Wildfire S. Described as the mini-version of HTC Desire S, the Wildfire S brings a higher resolution screen, more memory, and faster processor – even designed slightly smaller in dimensions than its predecessor.

The HTC Wildfire S is one of the handsets we’ll be seeing in the mid-range category to run on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), skinned with HTC Sense 3.0 UI.

HTC Wildfire S Specs and Features

Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread

3.2-inch Touch Screen Display @ 320 x 480 pixels

600 MHz CPU

up to 32GB on microSD

512 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM

3G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 384 Kbps)

GPRS, EDGE

Bluetooth 3.0 w/ A2DP

Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot Support

720p video recording

5MP autofocus camera w/ LED flash

GPS with aGPS support

1230 mAh Li-Ion battery

The HTC Wildfire S is officially available here in the Philippines starting today with SRP of Php 14,995 Php 15,500. I’m seeing some authorized distributors offering the unit online at a much lower price (as low as Php 14,000), so expect to see the handset on local shelves in that price range.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer: Philippines Price and Launch Update

So here it is, folks. The Honeycomb tablet we’ve first seen at CES 2011 from the Taiwan-based company, ASUS, will be available in your favorite local gadget stores anytime soon.

ASUS Eee Pad Transfromer
And when I say “soon”, the marketing chap from ASUS told me it would be on the last week of June or first week of July. And the official price is somewhere between Php 29 and 30K. To be more specific, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer will hit stores with a price tag of Php 29,995. That already includes the docking station with integrated keyboard which makes the Eee Pad Transformer, well – a transformer. Sans the docking station, you’ll get the device just for Php 22,995. And one last thing to note, I think it’s already the 32GB variant.

Flaunting a 10.1-inch IPS touchscreen display, the Eee Pad Transformer is one of the Android Honeycomb tablets powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. It comes with 1 GB memory, 5MP auto-focus camera (capable of HD video recording and playback), 1.2MP front-facing camera, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR support, HDMI, and among others. More of this tablet soon, probably when we see units on local shelves. So, how the price sounds to you?

Update: ASUS Eee Pad Transformer in Philippines gets official.

Play Angry Birds in Your Chrome Browser, for FREE!

It was during the recent Google I/O event when the search giant announced that the most downloaded smartphone game app, Angry Birds, will be made available to Google Chrome users.

Angry Birds in Google Chrome
And the good thing is, it’s totally free. It was just earlier today that I’ve tried playing the game directly on my web browser, and being addicted to the game on my iPhone and Android devices let me think there’s no reason to stop myself from playing the web-based version. And I also thought I would be selfish if I won’t share it to you.

So here it is. All you have to do is just fire up your Google Chrome web browser (download here if you don’t have one), and hit this link to join the birds on their harsh cry. It’s full of fun, believe me. But I warn you not to waste most of your valuable time. J

iOS Apps Reaches 500K; Angry Birds, the Most Popular Paid App of All Times

Apple, together with its developers and fans, has another reason to celebrate for yet another milestone achieved in iTunes App Store.

From its launch back in July 10, 2008 – the latest infographic shows that the number of approved apps in iTunes App Store reaches 500,000, based on collaborative effort from app search engine Chomp, app review site 148apps, and game publisher Chillingo.

The latest number of approved apps came from 85,569 unique developers. 37% of all apps are free and the average price for paid apps is $3.64. Angry Birds is still the most popular paid application of all times based on number of days at number 1 in iTunes App Store.

While Apple reaches the new milestone, its competitors are still trailing in stats. Just recently, Apple's stronger competitor, Google, announced that the Android Market had reached more than 200,000 apps. Other App Stores in the competition haven’t reached the 50,000 mark except for Nokia’s Ovi Store.

Take a look at the infographic below. (click to enlarge)

Nokia N8 Review: First Impression

It’s almost a week since the Nokia N8 lent to me get out of its box.

But it’s not that long that I explored and tested everything in the handset, thinking of having 2 more weeks dating this sexy phone from the Finns. I actually brought the unit with me while unleashing in San Remigio Beach Club last weekend, anticipating its imaging capability would be of any help at some point in the getaway. I’ll just write a separate review of its camera to see for myself (and yourself as well) if it’s indeed the winning point against any other models on its category. For the meantime, read my first impression of the handset after the break.

The Build

Being a tech blogger, I’ve known much about the Nokia N8 on print as far the design, specs, and features are concerned. But it feels different at your first grip of the device, reminding you of the hardware design-ins that it’s of Nokia.

The Nokia N8 frontage reveals four parts around the 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen monoblock display: the Menu button on the lower-left, the microphone on the lower-right, the earpiece at the center-top, and the front-facing camera on the upper-right of the screen.

At the bottom is where you’ll find the charging connector as well as the wrist strap hole.

At the back is the 12MP main camera with the Carl Zeiss optics. There’s the Xenon flash, loudspeaker, and tiny microphone sitting beneath the entire camera compartment.

I’m thinking though that Nokia N8 fell short of inside space that the main camera was placed in a screened-off area beyond its recorded width. But it still looks elegant and Nokia seems to highlight such powerhouse, telling everyone that no other phone maker has ever put the largest camera sensor every photography enthusiast would love except just Nokia.

The sides of Nokia N8 have the most essential parts. On the left side is where you’ll find the memory and SIM card slots, charging light indicator, and micro-USB connector.

The opposite side has the volume/zoom key, the lock switch, and camera key.

The HDMI connector is located at the top, just between the 3.5mm audio-video connector and the power key.

The actual weight of Nokia N8 is of no different than the iPhone 4 and the curve design on the sides helps it looks a bit narrower in the front landscape; though the spec sheet will tell you it’s actually wider and thicker than the latter.

The Symbian^3 OS in Nokia N8

To be honest, one of the many reasons why I became a fan of Nokia handsets is probably because of its intuitive interface. The early versions of Symbian OS are user-friendly that you always feel at ease when switching between different devices. The last Nokia handset I owned though, prior to shifting to Samsung and Apple brands was the Nokia 6120 Classic. It runs on Symbian S60 (3rd edition) platform and I was able to use it until late 2008. It’s actually one of the Nokia handsets I can recommend for a fast mobile internet and tethering experience.

The Nokia N8, however, is powered by the Symbian^3 OS released back in late 2010. Nokia N8 is actually the first handset to wear Symbian^3 and my experience of using Symbian S60 paves the way of getting to know the N8’s operating system.

Nokia N8 Specs and Features

WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100

GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900

Symbian^3 OS

680MHz ARM 11 processor

3D Graphics Broadcom BCM2727 GPU

3.5-inch Capacitive Touch Screen Display (640x360)

16GB on-board memory

135MB internal memory, Micro-SD up to 32GB

256MB RAM, 512MB ROM

12MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss Optics and Xenon Flash

720p HD video recording @ 25fps, playback @ 30fps

VGA front-facing camera for video calling

MicroUSB 2.0, USB On-The-Go

Bluetooth 3.0

3.5mm Audio/Video jack and TV out

1200mAh Li-Ion BL-4D Battery

113.5 x 59.12 x 12.9 mm

I’ll talk more about the specific features of Nokia N8 in the coming days, so just stay tuned for updates.

Facebook Scam Alert: Activate Dislike Button via HTC Sense

Dislike button on Facebook? No, there’s really nothing legit just yet.

And don’t let yourself get caught in a bait that will trick you to believing it does exist on Facebook. ‘Coz there’s none, believe me!

There’s a new scam spreading in Facebook like a wildfire. It updates your Facebook wall as if someone knowingly posted something interesting for you. It says:

Facebook just launched dislike button! Click on 'Activate Dislike Button' below to enable it on your account!
Sounds familiar, huh? Below the feed is the name of the app, via HTC Sense (feature that HTC smartphone users are enjoying) on this case that pushed update into your wall, as well as the usual “Like” and “Comment” links. But there’s a new one: Activate Dislike Button.

As usual, don’t click on that link. Clicking on the link will redirect users to a new page that give instructions which include copying several JavaScript codes and pasting in your browser’s address bar.

It’s a trick. It will do something you’re not expecting, even making you mad. If you do so, you’ll apparently see the “Dislike” button on every update that you see in your wall. But no, it will asks you to complete surveys while turning your Facebook account into zombie; that is, sending the same Facebook message you've got in your wall. At least now you know, so don’t be fooled!

Nokia N9 Teaser Leaked, Take Your First Glimpse

The folks over at Pocketnow scored once again after leaking what appears to be the official teaser ad Nokia had prepped for release on still unclear schedule.

Nokia N9

Nokia N9 with QWERTY Keyboard
The first video uploaded in YouTube was taken down for copyright claims; however, I managed to find the same video uploaded by another user. Have a quick look after the break.

That’s the Nokia N9. You probably have noticed resemblance of the previous handsets: the form factor reminds you of the Nokia E7, and seems like Nokia will bring the same imaging capability of the Nokia N8.

Front-facing camera (right-side)

12MP AF Rear Camera (Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8/28 Lens)
Oh yes, there’s still the same 12MP Auto-focus rear camera powered by Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8/28 lens. It features new UI with icons in “squarecle” shape and multi-tasking capabilities, which all could be of the MeeGo OS.

Nothing more revealed what this new Nokia powerhouse has inside, but we’ll be eyeing this one until Nokia make the handset official. [via]

I Think Globe Telecom Just Fooled Me, Or Everyone…

Last week, Globe Telecom sent out notifications to its subscribers telling about a rebate they will be offering to make up for the May 9th service interruption.

Rebate is in the form of free call, text, and mobile browsing. Globe said they will be sending SMS to subscribers no later than May 17th as soon as the special service is available for use.

It turned out May 17th had passed already and still I didn’t receive any SMS personally notifying me about the offer. Though I’m not expecting much of the free mobile browsing they are supposed to offer, the point is Globe should assure the said special service will certainly happen and be done according to promised schedule. Because on the very least, we can say Globe really values its customer. But the fact that until now there’s no word about the offer, I doubt if I still have to believe similar offers in the future.

Being said that, I thought I’m just fooled. And the loyal CTB readers and Globe subscribers particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao regions who read my post about the rebates they can expect, I think you’re just fooled too. Not unless you did received your rebates from the telco. So, do you have it?

Nokia N8 Unboxed

Nokia Philippines sent Cebu Tech Blogger a review unit of Nokia N8 through its PR agency in the Vis-Min region, PR Works.

The Nokia N8 was announced late April last year and it officially arrived in the Philippines last October, so it’s a bit late that it took almost half a year before I do a full review of the unit. Anyway, the good thing is it’s here now on CTB’s crib and I’ll be using it for 3 weeks, just enough to explore everything Nokia built unto the device. I did unbox the unit earlier and I’m excited to tease you first with some of the un-boxing photos before I write about my first expression of the handset.

So there you have it. The unit Nokia lent to me was enclosed in a blue elegant threaded box which also has some accessories on it including the battery charger, USB and HDMI connectors, and Nokia headset. I noticed it’s not a brand new unit though; but not a big deal, really. So expect this blog to talk more about Nokia N8 in the next few days, and I think those who have been eyeing for this would have an interesting read. Stay tuned!

HP is a big name in the tech industry to miss, but for those who completely have less idea about its products and services; HP actually creates new possibilities for technology to have a meaningful impact on people, business, governments and society by bringing together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, and IT infrastructure and services.

There are lots of models showcased in the event, and I’m thinking it’s better to feature every unit I’ve met in the succeeding days here on CTB – so just stay tuned for more updates about HP’s new products.

LG Optimus 2X, Optimus Black Goes on Sale Starting Today

I actually learned about this last weekend, but was trying to hold myself from writing about it.

Oh yes, I need to make sure this time CTB readers won’t be compromised with an LG-sale-thingy that will just turn into a huge hype and majority gets nothing. It was very disappointing, really. You remember that one?

Anyways, after trying out the scheduled “online” sale which started earlier today, it seems like LG keep their words at least on the very first day of its sale dubbed as “LG Optimus Amazing Discount”. It’s actually a month-long sale that started earlier today and will end come June 10th, so I wish everything will be smooth until the last day of the promo.

There’s one thing I liked about the sale though. It has a unique appeal at least to majority of Filipino customers because this is not the usual sale like what we see in mall settings. This one will be done online, and follows a certain schedules at irregular intervals, as seen in the mechanics below.

There are only two models involve here – the LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black. The LG Optimus 2X will be discounted as high as Php 5000 from its Php 27,990 SRP, while the latter will be discounted as high as Php 3000 from its Php 19,990 SRP.

Interested? Head over here and read full mechanics from here. As usual, do share you experiences about the sale.

Android Paid Apps are originally priced in US Dollars, but you can also see prices from the developer’s currency as well its Peso equivalent upon purchase.

Globe Telecom to Give Free Call, Text, or Mobile Internet to Subscribers Affected in May 9th Outage

Just few minutes after Globe posted an article on its own corporate blog earlier today, I received this SMS notifying me of a free mobile browsing the telco will offer as a way of making up for the service interruption the other day.

It reads,

As a valued customer, Globe is sending you FREE mobile browsing within the next few days. This is our way of saying “thank you” for being with Globe and our way of making up for the May 9 service interruption. Globe will send you a text no later than May 17 as soon as this special service is available for your use. This is to show that you are truly important to us.
Globe will also offer free call and text to other subscribers, probably depending on the type of account.

If you’re a Globe user, you are most likely to receive similar SMS notifying you of the free service. I was following the updates of the incident the other day, and it’s good to see Globe did a great job in restoring the service on the same day, despite of the multiple fiber cuts (due to weather according to initial findings) that caused the problem.

I’m thinking it’s really appreciative Globe is also doing this initiative to its subscribers. Something that should be done by all of the telcos I guess. [via]

Google Launches Music Beta, Allows You to Stream Music from the Cloud

A better way to play your music, that is how Google describe its new service called Music Beta.

Music Beta by Google is a cloud-based service that allows you to stream music in your computer and Android devices, similar to Amazon Cloud Drive (though this service also stores photos and videos); just with added features like easy playlist creation, “caching” of recently played music for offline use, and synchronization of music in all devices.

Though first available in the US, Music Beta by Google allows users to upload up to 20,000 songs for free. The service will require the Music App for Android handsets running at least Android 2.2 (Froyo). If you’re an Android user, I suggest you get in line and request a beta so you’d be among the first to avail of the service. Featured video after the break. [via]

Microsoft Buys VoIP Service Provider Skype

Rumors about Skype acquisition either by Facebook or Google have been swirling around since the past couple of days.

It turns out the acquisition is true, but it doesn’t involved the first two companies providing internet-based product and services. It’s actually Microsoft Corp. who will close the deal of acquiring the VoIP service provider Skype Communications.

Microsoft Corp. will acquire Skype Communications for US $8.5 billion in which the VoIP company will become a new business division within Microsoft. Part of the acquisition includes all the company’s technologies, the Skype software, legal responsibilities, and etc.

The acquisition of Skype is expected to boost Microsoft’s current internet-based communications platforms including Lync, Outlook, Messenger, Hotmail, as well in its online multiplayer gaming service Xbox Live. Microsoft will also bring Skype to Kinect, Windows Phone handsets, and other Windows devices, while being committed to continue investing and supporting Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms. Globe Telecom Advisory: Calls, SMS, and Internet Services – Interrupted

Globe Telecom subscribers, you certainly have less chance of reading this advisory earlier today. Not unless you have an alternative internet connection from other ISPs.

This seems like a worthy bit of information to share, just in case you’re wondering why you have difficulty sending SMS, making calls, or using mobile internet. Globe said there’s a fiber cut that caused the problem in selected areas in Visayas and Mindanao. However, it seems like subscribers in Luzon are also affected. I personally started experiencing the problem in my phone line Monday afternoon.

It reads:

ADVISORY: Globe Telecom experienced a service interruption covering selected areas in Visayas and Mindanao due to a fiber cut. As a result, subscribers may experience difficulty in sending text messages, making calls or using mobile internet in these areas.

Globe assures its subscribers that service restoration is ongoing. Subscribers will be informed as soon as service is back to normal.
Though quite disappointing for Globe subscribers, at least the telco thought of having this advisory. We can’t do anything but wait until the service is restored. Surely, I’ll keep you posted.
