Early this morning, I went home from work together with a friend who also like talking about “techy” stuffs – and one thing I opened in the conversation was about the IBM Challenge on Jeopardy!
Interestingly, he don’t have much idea about Jeopardy!, neither about IBM’s supercomputer called Watson. I understand though ‘coz Jeopardy! is actually not being televised here in the Philippines unless you subscribed to it through cable channels.
For the sake of those who heard about Jeopardy! for the first time – it’s actually a US syndicated game/ quiz show featuring trivia questions in various fields. Its “question and answer” format is unique in the sense that the host will give clues to contestants in the form of answers, and the contestants must response to the clues in a question form. Jeopardy! is a very popular show in the US that it totaled to 8,809 episodes to date since it officially started back in March 30, 1964. Among the most notable players-turned-champions in Jeopardy! include the names of Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.
On February 14-16th, a special episode of the quiz show called “Jeopardy! The IBM Challenge” aired on ABC, in which the all-time leading money winner of the game Ken Jennings together with the former’s runner up Brad Rutter (who is now considered as the biggest money winner in Jeopardy! after defeating Jennings), have been challenged by IBM to play with Watson in the game. Here’s a video featuring Watson, an overview of the Jeopardy! challenge, and what the supercomputer would do in Jeopardy!
That was a great teaser, isn’t it? Well, before we jump on the cool videos below, pardon me for having a spoiler. The 3-day IBM Challenge on Jeopardy! is already over, and Watson has been pronounced to defeat the champions after the finale. With 90 32-core IBM Power 750 Express servers and a total memory of 16 Terabytes, it would not be a big surprise that such incredible thinking machine indeed advances humans in deep analytics and processing data from its huge database of information. What would have been amazing is how the computer scientists at the IBM Thomas Watson Research Center able to design an algorithm and build a machine that perhaps could solve humanity’s confounding problems in real life.
This is not something we’ve just seen on Sci-Fi movies, folks. This is about a more-advanced development in the field of artificial intelligence. Without further ado, here are those great videos from The IBM Challenge. Enjoy!
