2010 Mobile Device Sales Surge 31.8 Percent Worldwide; Android Smartphone OS Grew 888.8 Percent from 2009

Research firm Gartner Inc. reported Wednesday the previous year’s final number of sales recorded for mobile devices worldwide.

Mobile device sales to end users in 2010 accounted a total of 1.6 Billion units, a 31.8 percent increase from 2009. Leading player by number of handsets sold is Nokia with 461.3 million units sold, followed by Samsung and LG Electronics with 281 and 114 million units sold, respectively. Research In Motion and Apple, Inc. displaced Sony Ericsson and Motorola at the 4th and 5th spot with 47.4 and 46.5 million units, respectively.

Nokia, Samsung, and LG’s total market share declined significantly together with other players like Sony Ericsson and Motorola; while Apple, RIM, ZTE, HTC, and Huawei have better numbers in terms of market share.

Worldwide smartphone sales to end users grew 72 percent in 2010 from a year earlier, to a total of 297 million units. Symbian OS still accounted the most number of handsets despite a 9.3 percent decline of the market share. Android market share is on the extent of sloping sharply in which it grew 888.8 percent in the previous year accounting to 67.2 million units, taking the number 2 spot of the most-widely used smartphone OS. Though Android surpassed Symbian OS in the fourth quarter of 2010, legacy products from Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and other phone manufacturers using the latter platform still pulled up the OS from the Finnish company to the first spot.

RIM’s BlackBerry OS and Apple’s iOS took the 3rd and 4th position, respectively; while Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 at the 5th position of the total market share by Operating System in 2010. [via]
