Greenpois0n Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 (Mac Version) is out!

It’s only a matter of 2 weeks waiting since the Chronic Dev Team hinted us that they are coming back to the jailbreaking scene with an updated version of its Greenpois0n capable of jailbreaking iDevices on iOS 4.2.1.

@P0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team announced that the latest version of Greenpois0n (RC5) is now available for download. However, the first release is only for Mac users and is still on the Beta stage. Windows users may need to wait a little more time while the Dev Team is still working on it.

Greenpois0n RC5 can jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, and the iPad – on iOS 4.2.1 untethered. Unlike the iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak, the Greenpois0n jailbreak won’t need the iOS 4.2 Beta 3 SHSH blobs along the process. P0sixninja also reiterated that Greenpois0n RC5 doesn’t support hactivation, which means you have to hactivate your device through iTunes. He also added that the latest version of Greenpois0n has already been patched on iOS 4.3.

Please note that Greenpois0n needs your iPhone to have iOS 4.2.1 installed and for iPhone 3G and 3GS users, your baseband will be updated to 5.15.04. If you need baseband 5.15.04 unlocked, I strongly suggest to stay away from upgrading to iOS 4.2.1. The iPhone Dev Team has a tricky way of upgrading baseband 5.15.04 to iPad baseband 6.15.00 and finally unlocking it; however it uses the Redsn0w tool and there’s no way the Chronic Dev Team’s Greenpois0n can do that, just yet.

Greenpois0n RC5 for Mac can be downloaded from this link (original site); however it may still continue encountering too much server loads for the time being. Thanks there’s a mirror download link as an alternative.

Update: Greenpois0n RC5 for Windows is also available for download.

Smart 3G Mobile Internet for Php 1 per Minute

Smart Telecommunications has extended its Mobile Internet Christmas Promo in which prepaid subscribers can use mobile internet for 1-Peso per minute, instead of the regular rate of Php 10 per 30 minutes.

The promo has been confirmed to last until February 28th, 2011. Prepaid subscribers don’t need to undergo a registration process in order to avail of the promo. As soon as the subscriber avail of the regular rate of Php 10 per 30 minutes mobile internet, and the system detects a remaining airtime balance of less than Php 11 and greater than or equal to Php 3 on the prepaid SIM – users will be redirected to a web page prompting them to whether “PROCEED” with the browsing rate of 1-Peso per minute or not.

This move is of advantage for those users who only need to check updates on their favorite social networking sites, for checking emails, or for any online activities that only takes a minute or two. The logic on this promo is that for every moment you connect and disconnect the internet in a span of 1 minute, you’ll only be charged for 1-Peso. In the regular rate, even if you didn’t go online for 30 minutes (say for example just 10 minutes) – you’ll still be charged with the Php 10 flat rate. But this Php 1 per minute charging is quite confusing, ‘coz if you do the Math – you’ll come up with a total fee of Php 60 for all combined per minute usage summing up to 1 hour. Got it?

Google Android Market Website is Now Live

Previously, you can only visit Google Android Market through your Android-based device such as smartphone and tablet- but this time; you can already visit the site on a bigger interface through the use of your favorite web browser.

Listing more than 100 apps, the Android Market offers its users an easy navigation to browse different apps and games, allowing them to read and post reviews about a particular app, and send apps directly to the device. The Web-based Android Market also allows users to share apps directly on the site to the popular micro-blogging site, Twitter. But there’s no way you can share any app directly to Facebook. Thinking of rivalry? I think so…

What more with this cloud-based Android Market is the easy access using your Google account, in which you can see and manage all the apps you’ve purchased and downloaded. You can visit the website by hitting this link.

Hopefully, we can see Apple doing the same for its iTunes contents. Yeah, I’m referring to the cloud-based iTunes- at least that would be more flexible managing the contents in the clouds rather than on local computer libraries. What do you think?

Globe Super Sakto Calls: Php 0.15 per Second Calls to Globe and TM

Filipino readers, got a tip earlier today regarding one of Globe Telecom’s current active promos for its mobile subscribers.

There’s the Globe Super Sakto Calls promo valid until February 28th, in which users can enjoy calling other Globe or TM users for only 15 cents per second. There’s no registration required. Interested subscribers who want to avail the promo only need to dial 232, plus the 10-digit Globe or TM mobile number. For example, to call 09171234567, just dial 2329171234567. While the call is active, every second counts for 15 cents.

You would probably think that if your call last for a minute, you will be charged for Php 9 instead of just Php 6.50. Well, that’s true. The actual logic behind this promo is you benefit from it if you’re the type of caller who just stays on the line for a very short period of time; that is for example - just a matter of 20 to 30 seconds. If you think you need a longer time to talk, don’t avail of this promo. Instead, use the regular call rates. Got it?

Google Says Bing is Copying its Search Results

There’s a developing story here, folks. The search giant, Google, says on its official blog that its rival search engine owned by Microsoft is copying its search results on queries.

Bing, which also powers Facebook search as well as Yahoo! search, is allegedly using Google web search results to improve its own search ranking for various queries.

Google claims not into prejudice after they conducted an experiment that shows and proves their suspicions on the “silly” activity to be stronger. One of which is the creation of “synthetic queries” that returns no results at all. Google manipulated the results of those “synthetic queries” in which they inserted unique webpage for each query that has nothing to do with it; in other words, completely irrelevant result for a particular query. Google defines “synthetic queries” as something you can’t expect a user will search for it.

Surprisingly, if you search for the said keywords using Bing, the same webpages will appear on search results. Interesting!

Microsoft is denying the allegation saying that the software juggernaut is not copying Google’s result. However, Google insist that Bing could possibly been using other Microsoft applications that will allow it to acquire data as to what people search for on Google and which of the results the users click. An example of this application is Internet Explorer 8, which can send data to Microsoft via its Suggested Sites feature; or the Bing Toolbar which can send data via Microsoft’s Customer Experience Improvement Program. You can read more about this story at the official Google Blog.

Intel Found Flaw on Sandy Bridge Chipset, Codenamed Cougar Point

We are all excited about Sandy Bridge, Intel’s next generation microprocessor architecture officially announced just recently at CES 2011.

We are about to expect 29 new Core i-Series processors under this family to hit stores, but apparently a significant design issue on Intel’s 6 Series chipset has been discovered by the company that could possibly result to chaos.

In a press release, Intel announced that it has discovered a design issue in a recently released chipset – the Intel 6 Series, codenamed Cougar Point – in which in some cases the reliability of the Serial ATA ports within the chipset may degrade over time and could potentially affect performance of devices that utilize such interface, such as the optical and hard-disk drives.

The problem points to the four (4) 3Gbps SATA option of both H67 and P67 Intel 6-Series Chipsets. Technically, Cougar Point comes in two variants – the H67 and P67, in which the main difference is the support for processor graphics as well as memory and graphics over-clocking. By design, both of these variants have four (4) 3Gbps and two (2) 6Gbps SATA ports. And the flaw discovered points to the first one, caused by a single wrong-biased transistor that eventually results to a high leakage current within the affected circuitry. However, using the two (2) 6Gbps SATA slots has no problem and will work smoothly as expected.

Intel 6 Series Chipset (Click to enlarge)
Cougar Point is the chipset being utilized in computer systems powered by Intel’s latest Second Generation Core Processors family, codenamed Sandy Bridge - but the failure on the chipset doesn’t implicate defects on the latest processors. Intel says no other products have been affected by the issue, and the company has already corrected the design flaw.

Intel has stopped shipping the affected chipsets and has begun manufacturing a new version chipset that will resolve the issue. It's expected to be available late February, and the chip maker is expecting full volume recovery by April. This mishap will cost Intel Corporation $300 million revenue reduction for the first quarter of 2011, plus an estimated $700 million cost for repair and replacement of affected chipsets- thus that whopping amount of money explains why there’s no official word for a full-blown recall just yet.
