Fix iOS 4.3.3 PDF Exploit Used in JailbreakMe 3.0 with PDF Patcher 2

Following the release of JailbreakMe 3.0, Apple is expected to release iOS 4.3.4 to fix security issues on iOS 4.3.3.

As I mentioned on my earlier post, JailbreakMe 3.0 exploits what is known as a PDF hole in iOS. After jailbreaking any iDevices supported with JailbreakMe 3.0, users have to note that the PDF exploit remains unpatched and since it’s a known vulnerability – it makes easier for others to use for malice. That is for sure, Apple need to release a firmware update which will address the issue for the sake of majority of its users.

If Apple releases iOS 4.3.4, those who jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 are left with two options:

  • Upgrade to iOS 4.3.4 yet losing the untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3.

  • Save the untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3 by not upgrading to iOS 4.3.4, but leaving the device vulnerable.

If you care for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3 but don’t mind much regarding the security implications of running a vulnerable firmware (particularly those iPad 2 users since you have only JailbreakMe 3.0 to use for untethered jailbreak), of course that would convince you to choose the second option.

Well, if you just want to stay on a jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 – here’s good news for you.

The main concern here really is security. And since the creator of JailbreakMe definitely knows that, he had already prepared a tweak that will patch the exploit. It’s called PDF Patcher 2.

PDF Patcher 2 patches the PDF vulnerability, hence the name, as used by JailbreakMe 3.0. It can only be installed in a jailbroken iDevice, of course; so if you’re much concern of security, here’s how to get it.

Launch Cydia, Search for “PDF”, and PDF Patcher 2 is there in the result. Tap on it to install and once you’re done, you’ll be asked to restart springboard.

So that’s it, your device is now secure as far PDF hole is concerned. You can now forget about iOS 4.3.4, not unless Apple brings something new on it. Right?

  • 1.10 Create a new folder in your desktop, and rename the folder as Pwnage. Place iOS 4.3.3 in that folder. If you don’t have a copy of iOS 4.3.3 firmware yet, you can get one direct from Apple servers through the download links here. Just make sure to select the right IPSW or iOS firmware for your device.

  • 1.11 Connect your iPod Touch to computer. If iTunes is not configured to launch when iPod Touch is connected, launch it manually.

  • 1.12 In iTunes, select your iPod Touch in the left pane under “Devices”.

  • 1.13 Right-click on your iPod Touch, and select “Back Up”.

  • 1.14 Hold down "Shift" key if using Windows, or "Option" key if using Mac – and click the "Restore" button in iTunes.

  • 1.15 Look for the iOS 4.3.3 IPSW you saved in Pwnage folder in desktop (Step 1.10), and click "Open". iTunes will then upgrade your iPod Touch firmware to iOS 4.3.3.

2. Once you’re already running iOS 4.3.3, launch Safari browser from springboard.

3. Navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com/

4. Tap on “Free” button, then tap “Install”.

JailbreakMe 3.0 to Jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 is Out!

So here is it! After that “dictionary attack” that caused this jailbreak to be leaked few days ago, creator Comex was forced to release a new version of the browser-based jailbreaking tool – JailbreakMe 3.0.

JailbreakMe.com in Safari
JailbreakMe is the easiest jailbreaking tool to use among all available jailbreaks, as one is only required to navigate to www.jailbreakme.com using the Safari browser of iOS.

JailbreakMe 3.0 exploits a PDF hole in iOS 4.3.3 (similar to JailbreakMe 2.0), allowing users to free iDevices including the first-gen iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, and iPod Touch 4G. It also supports CDMA-based iPhone 4 (Verizon iPhone 4) running iOS 4.2.6 through iOS 4.2.8. JailbreakMe 3.0 is an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 and it’s the first tool to offer untethered jailbreak for iPad 2 running the latest firmware to date.

Stay tuned for more updates as I’m going to post tutorials on how to jailbreak each supported iDevice using JailbreakMe 3.0.
